Company profile:

The Shadow Robot Company is a UK SME developing advanced robotics technologies and systems, including advanced manipulation technologies. The company was founded in 1997 by a group of independent robotics researchers and now includes 20 engineers working in a wide range of research and engineering capabilities across the entire range of robotics design and development Shadow has been developing and applying dexterous manipulation since 1998, and works with many of the lead innovators in sensing and control solutions. Shadow’s team have long experience designing and developing new types of robotic hardware and systems, as well as significant expertise in the integration and systems engineering work required to support this process. In FP7 projects Shadow has led integration and trial support work, bringing a clear focus on robust usable platforms that efficiently and effectively support research work.

Products and services:

The Shadow Dexterous Hand is the most advanced robotic hand available in the world, offering the full movement capability of the human hand. Customers include NASA, Carnegie Mellon, ESA, Hughes Research, and a range of top university research groups. Shadow is applying their Dextrous Hand technology, looking at applications where human dexterity is required but the presence of humans is undesirable. The Dexterous Hand offers the possibility of constructing a robot with the same manipulation abilities as a human, which could be operated remotely to perform a task deftly and safely. Shadow is currently working on the commercialisation of this system, which requires development of supporting infrastructure as well as bringing to production advanced robotic systems. Shadow has developed the Air Muscle technology, producing innovative muscles with greatly extended lifespan, as well as innovative muscles for new applications. It has taken an active role in increasing knowledge about the Air Muscle, assisting university departments with the development of robots and other devices based on this technology.

Shadow has now brought to market the RoNeX product, a scalable infrastructure for robotics systems engineering. This product is a spinout from the FP7 project STIFF-FLOP, where Shadow developed it as the hardware infrastructure for the integration of the development work of the 12 partners. Shadow holds a number of patents around the areas of hardware for dexterous manipulation, robotics actuation and sensing.
